CARB Announces New Workshop Regarding Tier 5 Rulemaking Concepts

CARB Tier 5 RulemakingThe California Air Resources Board (CARB) recently announced a new virtual public workshop regarding its ongoing off-road diesel engine Tier 5 rulemaking efforts.

CARB staff intends to introduce its initial concepts for an in-use testing requirement for off-road diesel engines to obtain real-world emissions data. The proposals will likely include the use of NOx sensors for data collection, annual reporting, and registration requirements, as well as potential enforcement actions for non-compliance equipment.

In-use testing programs conducted by engine manufacturers currently exist in heavy-duty on-highway applications, but they are a new concept to off-highway equipment and engine manufacturers. CARB’s proposal would create a new compliance dimension in an already complex regulatory environment.

The public workshop is scheduled for May 2, 2022, and AEM intends on participating in the call to better understand CARB’s intentions as well as represent the industry’s voice during these discussions.

The association encourages all stakeholders to register for this workshop and participate in the call. For more information, please reach out to AEM Director of Global Standards and Compliance Jason Malcore at jmalcore@aem.org
